Interesting opinion piece on the whether religion is a drag on human development

I'm not sure if it's the same study but I've seen data like this before. I don't think we can conclude that religion removes morality, as tempting as that would be. I think in more poverty stricken countries there is more violent crime, and poverty also probably influences people to hope that there is an afterlife that isn't as crappy as this one.

I think one thing that we can conclude though, based on the data from developed countries that have very low homicide rates as well as high rates of agnosticism/atheism, is that religion is not required for a moral compass. People who argue that baffle and terrify me. What if they forget the commandment about not killing people and just go off on me with an Uzi for fun?
